TIPS & TRICKS
TIP: Upgrading Your Journal Volumes from The Journal 4 (or earlier)
If you have either The Journal 4 (or The Journal 3) installed, then the first time you run The Journal 5 it will detect your existing Journal Volumes and offer to import them into The Journal 5.
When you are prompted "Import Journal Volume into The Journal 5?", click on "Yes" to start the import.
The import process copies your TJ4/TJ3 Journal Volumes to a new location before upgrading them. Your existing Journal Volumes will not be changed.
The upgrade happens in 2 steps:
1. Database upgrade. This happens the first time you open an imported Journal Volume.
2. User upgrade. This happens the first time you log in with a user name.
If you have a lot of entries, the upgrade may take a few minutes.
NOTE: A user's auto-login setting (no prompting for password) is not upgraded, so you will be prompted for your password. Most auto-logins have a blank password (just hit ENTER when prompted). If you need your password reset, email support@davidrm.com and request a password reset code. When the upgrade is complete, you can set auto-login again by clicking on the User menu and choosing "Auto-Login".
Upgrading Your Journal Volumes from The Journal 4 installed on a USB drive
NOTE: You will need about 20 MB of space just to install The Journal 5, and then about twice as much free space as your TJ4 Journal Volume currently uses (it won't always need this much space; just during the import and upgrade).
First, install The Journal 5 to your USB drive.
Run The Journal 5. It will create a new, empty Journal Volume for you.
To import your TJ4 Journal Volumes do this: Click on the File menu, Journal Volume sub-menu, and choose "Import Journal Volume..."
Browse to your TJ4 Journal Volume folder and click on "OK".
The Journal 5 will then copy the Journal Volume into your new Journal Volumes folder and upgrade it.
If you do not have The Journal 4 (or earlier) installed, but you do have a backup file (*.JBK or *.JBU) from The Journal 4 (or earlier), you can upgrade from that.
The first time you run The Journal 5, you will be shown the "New User Wizard". On the first page of the wizard click on "I need to Restore from a Backup of The Journal", then click on Next.
You will then browse to select the backup file to restore from.
Once the restore has finished, The Journal 5 will ask you to confirm that you want the Journal Volume upgraded. Follow the on-screen instructions to upgrade the Journal Volume.
The upgrade happens in 2 steps:
1. Database upgrade. This happens the first time you open an imported Journal Volume.
2. User upgrade. This happens the first time you log in with a user name.
If you have a lot of entries, the upgrade may take a few minutes.
